ASSISI

This is an important Umbrian city gently nestling on the slopes of Mount Subasio. Still protected by an imposing city wall, the town retains the traditional characteristics of a typical Umbrian village. In 1180, St Francis, patron saint of Italy, was born here. It is dominated by two of its wonders, the great basilica of St Francis and the massive Rocca Maggiore. Assisi, with its historic centre and symbolic monuments, became a UNESCO site in the year 2000.
